Our History
Nestled in the heart of Gilling East, The Fairfax Arms stands as a testament to centuries of rich heritage and enduring hospitality. Our story is intrinsically linked to the illustrious Fairfax family, whose legacy has shaped the very fabric of this picturesque North Yorkshire village.
Origins Rooted in Nobility
The Fairfax Arms derives its name from the esteemed Fairfax family, long-time residents of the neighbouring Gilling Castle. The castle itself boasts a storied past, originally constructed in the 14th century by the Etton family. In 1349, through the marriage of Margaret de Etton to Thomas Fairfax, the estate was entailed to the Fairfax lineage. By 1489, Thomas Fairfax of Walton successfully claimed the property, marking the beginning of the Fairfax family’s enduring association with Gilling East.
The Fairfax family’s influence is evident in the architectural grandeur of Gilling Castle. Sir William Fairfax, in 1571, undertook significant renovations, preserving the medieval foundations while introducing Elizabethan features such as the Great Chamber, adorned with intricate heraldic decorations. The castle remained under Fairfax ownership until 1793, leaving an indelible mark on the region’s history.
A Legacy of Hospitality
Situated at the base of the hill leading to Gilling Castle, The Fairfax Arms has long served as a welcoming haven for travellers and locals alike. While the exact date of establishment remains a subject of local lore, the inn’s enduring presence is a testament to its role in the community. Over the years, it has evolved, blending traditional charm with modern comforts, all while honouring its historical roots.
